3. Tim reminded us that a medium is just a “means of human communication.”  Media include everything from printed newspapers and blogs to smoke signals and church sermons (Courtesy of Tim Walker, Social Media Breakfast Austin).

I love this statement, it’s simple, to the point and something that is rooted in my own ideology. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamor of the tools. There are lots of them, but the tools won’t magically work by themselves, they need to be directed in a thoughtful manner. As a communicator, marketer, consumer, or other, you have a responsibility to determine if the methods of communication are appropriate to the task, goal or audience.

Miscommunication occurs all the time. There’s an art to communication, to understanding the recipient and how 500+ other factors can play with or against the message you are offering. Perception and interpretation are paradoxical, even more so with the onset of so many new means of communication. It’s easy to be persuaded by the shinier offerings, but sometimes the most effective means of communication is found in the most simple acts, a phone call, note, hand shake or cup of coffee.

So before you get drawn into the bright light, think about what you’re trying to achieve, who you’re trying to reach,  how they prefer to be conversed with and lastly, what you want that interaction to say about you, because the definition of your own reputation is inevitably wrapped up within the method(s) and means selected.

Lingering questions regarding Twitter are undeniable and its presence is inescapable. Even more so,  due in part to the recent events in Mumbai.

Mumbai: Twitter’s Moment
Citizen journalism goes real time as Mumbai attacks unfold.

Twitter was inundated with “tweets”–short bursts of information posted by users –Wednesday as mainstream media outlets struggled to catch up with the scope of the attacks on India’s financial capital.

Specific to recent coverage, the question begs will the events of Mumbai impact the direction and/or definition of Twitter? As mainstream media outlets try to disassemble, disrupt and define Twitter, the Twittering community continues its constant state of evolution as individuals, communities and more make Twitter work for them. While I’m unsure of what’s next for Twitter, I do know that it’s not to be ignored, but rather participated in and cultivated throughout as Twitter, and its communities, work to define, refine and redefine itself for the foreseeable future.

For those of you who know me, my obsession is not only for technology, media…um, and wine, but also for handmade goods and lovely creative things. I was lucky enough to stumble upon two such finds this afternoon during lunch thanks to Etsy: Creature Comforts and Melissa Loves.

Both blogs are full of wonderfully satisfying creative and stylish goodies. I particularly love Creative Comforts’ “CHIC FOR CHEAP” segment – and Melissa has one too! I’m hooked, as I’m always trying to remain pulled together on a dime, and am eager for the next post in this series. In the meantime, I’m off to track down that eye catching blue top and the Converse jacket. Thanks ladies!

For the first time in quite a while I received a notification that a comment had been left on my blog. The excitement was surprising. I experienced a twitter of butterflies as I went to see who had commented – but alas, it was nothing, but spam pertaining to some male enhancement or another. Not what I was hoping for, but I should have known better. If I could only rekindled my relationship with blogging.

What happened? As with most relationships there’s a transition when one member of the relationship changes – the other is left trying to reconnect the dots with their lost companion whether literally or figuratively. I’m presently in the process of doing just that – connecting the dots – but it has proven to be a bit more challenging then when I was in kindergarten. The dots are more complex in form and trying to figure out what connects to what is an exercise in and of itself.

But progress is being made. I’ve realized, which dots are absent. My soul has been craving creativity, which has repeatedly been stifled for one reason or another. Music is back. Hearing a song or artist for the very first time is indescribable. I’m relishing in simple moments. So my relationship with blogging is changing. It’s not solely about the external movements occurring out within society, but rather exploring the internal shifts within myself as I move through that ever present and changing society.

Where do I go from? That’s to be continued…

Following an AM conversation with my husband, it was brought to my attention that the difference between “networks” and “networking” wasn’t clarified in my previous post and it is a difference worth noting.

“Network(s)” (i.e. social networks) refer to ones own immediate social group. A network of people who are not strangers, but known individuals brought together via a collective purpose – a cause, organization or some other form of relation. “Networking” (i.e. social networking) is much more reflective of interactions and relationships with unknown individuals. As danah boyd mentioned that this can be inclusive of dating sites, chat rooms, bulletin boards, etc.
